Waste Flow Diagram Project

 

Developed as a collaboration between GIZ, University of Leeds, Eawag-Sandec and Wasteaware; the Waste Flow Diagram (WFD) project aimed to develop a toolkit that would allow cities and municipalities to quickly assess their municipal solid waste management system and map the flows of waste. This toolkit was to integrate with the UN-Habitat led SDG 11.6.1 methodology, of which the team also provided input, and further include plastic specific flows related to a city’s plastic pollution.

 

The project was founded on the back of a previous preliminary toolkit developed by partner Joachim Stretz (RWA / Wasteaware). This was adapted as necessary to link with SDG 11.6.1 methodology and provide greater insight into the waste management system and its relation in particular to plastic leakage. The Waste Flow Diagram project commenced in September 2018, with its final launch alongside the complementary ISWA Plastic Pollution Calculator at the ISWA World Congress in Bilbao in 2019.

Now released, the work does not stop there – the team are continuously looking to apply the toolkit across the world and demonstrate its capabilities in helping solve waste management problems such as marine litter.
